Ende 1918 wurden in Verdun Tausende von Leichen entdeckt. Charles Ginisty, Bischof von Verdun, beschloss, die Gebeine der nicht identifizierten Soldaten an einem Ort des Gedenkens zu sammeln. Das Geb\u00e4ude wurde im Jahr 1932 eingeweiht. So sind 130.000 Soldaten aus allen Gesellschaftsschichten in diesem Beinhaus begraben. Au\u00dferdem wurden 15.000 franz\u00f6sische Soldaten in den Gr\u00e4bern vor dem Denkmal beigesetzt.<\/p>\n\n

Heute sind im Inneren des Heiligtums fast 4.000 Namen von Soldaten eingraviert, die bei Verdun vermisst wurden. Bei Einbruch der Dunkelheit leuchtet von der Spitze des Denkmals ein 40 km weit sichtbares Licht, das \u00fcber die Tausenden von Soldaten wacht, die nicht auf dem Schlachtfeld gefunden wurden. \n<\/p>\n\n

Zu Beginn der Besichtigung k\u00f6nnen Sie einen kurzen Film \u00fcber die Schlacht von Verdun und die Geschichte des Denkmals sehen. Im Kinosaal des Beinhauses finden auch gelegentlich Konferenzen und Symposien statt.<\/p>\n\n

Nach der Besichtigung des Klosters k\u00f6nnen die Besucher in einer Kapelle meditieren. Die Glasfenster stellen Szenen aus dem Krieg dar: ein Soldat, eine Krankenschwester, ein Panorama des Schlachtfelds… Die ausdrucksstarken Gesichter erinnern an die Bedeutung und Intensit\u00e4t der Realit\u00e4t des Ersten Weltkriegs. Die Gr\u00fcnder des Heiligtums sind in der Kapelle begraben. <\/p>\n\n

Der Wunsch, alle K\u00e4mpfer unabh\u00e4ngig von ihrer Nationalit\u00e4t, Division, Position oder gar Religion zusammenzubringen, war stark ausgepr\u00e4gt. Es stimmt zwar, dass das Projekt Kapellen f\u00fcr jede Religion beinhaltete. Die Protestanten wollten keinen Platz darin einnehmen. Die Israeliten errichteten 1938 ihr eigenes Denkmal, und erst 2006 wurde ein Denkmal f\u00fcr muslimische Soldaten errichtet.<\/p>\n\n

Der 46 Meter hohe Turm des Beinhauses, der auch „Totenlaterne“ genannt wird, bietet einen herrlichen Ausblick auf das Schlachtfeld. Au\u00dferdem ist dort eine Szene zu sehen, die das Leben der Soldaten auf beiden Seiten
