Zwischen 1815 und 1945 war die Stadt jedoch Gegenstand territorialer Streitigkeiten und wechselte mehrmals die Nationalit\u00e4t.&#13;\n<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nach dem Wiener Kongress von 1815 wurde St. Vith, welches fr\u00fcher zu Luxemburg geh\u00f6rte, Teil der preu\u00dfischen Provinz Rheinland. Die Bev\u00f6lkerung spricht Deutsch und hat eine germanische Tradition. Am Ende des Ersten Weltkriegs wurde der Kanton durch den Vertrag von Versailles an Belgien abgetreten, um die Sch\u00e4den, die das Land erlitten hatte, zu beheben. Innerhalb von 10 Tagen nach dem Einmarsch in Belgien im Jahr 1940 wurde es von Nazi-Deutschland \u00fcbernommen. Fagnoul<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Saint-Vith, M\u00e4rtyrerstadt<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Diese Ver\u00e4nderungen f\u00fchrten zu vielen tragischen Situationen, insbesondere w\u00e4hrend der K\u00e4mpfe. In der Tat wurden viele Familien auf beiden Seiten der Grenze getrennt, so dass Br\u00fcder oder Cousins gezwungen waren, gegeneinander zu k\u00e4mpfen. Es kam immer wieder zu Loyalit\u00e4tskonflikten, die die Bev\u00f6lkerung zwangen, sich zwischen dem belgischen Land und dem deutschen Vaterland zu entscheiden. Am 23. Dezember 1944 gewannen die Deutschen nach mehrt\u00e4gigen K\u00e4mpfen die Oberhand und die Amerikaner zogen sich westlich des Flusses Salm zur\u00fcck. Am 25. und 26. Dezember 1944 wurde Saint-Vith von den Alliierten intensiv bombardiert. Fast 600 Geb\u00e4ude wurden zerst\u00f6rt oder schwer besch\u00e4digt, d. h. 95 % der Stadt. Die Gesamtverluste der Amerikaner waren ebenfalls sehr hoch: 12.500 Gefallene, Verwundete, Gefangene oder Vermisste.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nur 60 Jahre nach der Ardennenoffensive wurde St. Vith im Jahr 2004 vom belgischen Staat der Titel M\u00e4rtyrerstadt verliehen.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Das einzige nicht zerst\u00f6rte \u00dcberbleibsel der mittelalterlichen Stadtbefestigung von St. Vith ist heute der B\u00fcchelturm. Es war das einzige Geb\u00e4ude, das die Bombardierung im Jahr 1944 \u00fcberstanden hatte.
