Hauptplatz des Verteidigungssystems<\/h2>\n\n

Der Festungsring von Verdun, eine mittelalterliche Festungsanlage, wurde nach dem Deutsch-Franz\u00f6sischen Krieg von 1870 zwischen 1874 und 1914 vollst\u00e4ndig modernisiert. <\/p>\n\n

Er besteht aus zwei m\u00e4chtigen G\u00fcrteln von bewaffneten Festungen und Unterst\u00e4nden, die die Stadt und die unterirdische Zitadelle umgeben. So wurde er zu einem der wichtigsten Punkte im Verteidigungssystem, das das franz\u00f6sische Territorium vor Invasionen sch\u00fctzen sollte.<\/p>\n\n

Der damaligen Propaganda zufolge war das Fort Douaumont die st\u00e4rkste Festung in der Gegend und wurde im Februar 1916, zu Beginn der Schlacht von Verdun, von den Deutschen erobert. \n<\/p>\n\n

Die deutschen Truppen besetzten es acht Monate lang und nutzten es als St\u00fctzpunkt f\u00fcr ihre Offensiven. <\/p>\n\n

Trotz mehrerer Versuche, das Fort zur\u00fcckzuerobern, konnten die Franzosen es erst am 24. Oktober 1916 wieder einnehmen.<\/p>\n\n
