Der Krieg mobilisierte Millionen von M\u00e4nnern in ganz Europa, insbesondere in Frankreich und Deutschland. Er hat ganze Generationen mitgerissen. Ob auf dem Feld oder in der Fabrik, die Frauen mussten in Frankreich wie in den anderen am Konflikt beteiligten L\u00e4ndern f\u00fcr das Funktionieren der Wirtschaft sorgen. Viele waren Krankenschwestern an der Front oder Kriegspatinnen, also Frauen, die den Kontakt zu den Soldaten an der Front hielten.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Anbetracht dieser Situation, des Bedarfs der nationalen Industrie und des Interesses von Bewerberinnen wurden nach Kriegsende Ingenieurschulen er\u00f6ffnet. Sie begr\u00fc\u00dften Frauen in Positionen, die damals als typisch m\u00e4nnlich galten. \nSo nahm die \u00c9cole Centrale de Paris 1917 ihre erste gemischte Klasse auf. Es folgten das Nationale Institut f\u00fcr Agronomie (1919), die \u00c9cole sup\u00e9rieure d’\u00e9lectricit\u00e9 (1919) und die \u00c9cole de chimie de Paris (1919). In Belgien schloss 1924 die erste Frau ihr Ingenieurstudium an der Universit\u00e4t in Gent ab.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Der Ausbruch des Weltkriegs \u00f6ffnete somit die T\u00fcr zu einem neuen Platz f\u00fcr Frauen in der Gesellschaft und fiel mit den ersten feministischen Bewegungen zusammen (die britischen Suffragetten waren bereits sehr aktiv). Die R\u00fcckkehr zur Normalit\u00e4t in den fr\u00fchen 1920er Jahren war keine leichte Aufgabe, da die Frauen gezwungen waren, ihre traditionelle Rolle wieder aufzunehmen. Der Kampf f\u00fcr die Rechte der Frauen erhielt jedoch einen neuen
