After the fall of Fort Eben-Emael, Fort Aubin-Neufchâteau, with the help of the forts of Battice and Barchon, blocked the German troops for 11 days. The fort underwent 23 infantry assaults preceded by artillery and aviation bombardments. Nevertheless, it resisted heroically until its defensive resources were exhausted. The German troops recognized that this was one of the most brutal artillery battles on the Western Front.
