“Schacko Klak – Biller aus der Kandheet (1935-1945)” is the first novel of a trilogy by Roger Manderscheid. It was published in 1988 by Editions Phi. This Luxembourgish title could be translated as “Schacko Klak – Childhood Photos”.<\/p>\n\n
These novels have strong autobiographical overtones. At the centre of the story is Chr\u00ebscht Knapp, who tells of his childhood in Itzig during the years of the Nazi occupation. He also talks about his first great love: Jhuliett Reiter. <\/p>\n\n
The novel is a portrait of the so-called “blatzkueder”, “jeizi” or “toxi”, told on two different levels. On the one hand there is the perspective of the four-year-old boy, on the other hand the 56-year-old adult living in Berlin who reflects on the past in letters to his childhood friend.<\/p>\n\n
