In just two weeks, the city of Vis\u00e9 was turned upside down at the beginning of the First World War. In fact, it was in this Belgian city that the first battle of the Great War in Europe took place. On August 4, 1914, it became the first martyred city of the conflict. The occupation of Vis\u00e9 was violent: 585 houses were burned on August 15, and 42 civilians were killed. \n<\/p>\n\n

We can immerse ourselves in this shocking story thanks to fictional witnesses whose stories are based on the moving diary of Florent Vliegen. These characters take us from these dark years to the city’s reconstruction.<\/p>\n\n

Individual visits are available in French, English, Dutch, and German, thanks to 18 panels punctuating a walk of about 4km. For additional explanations, a booklet is available for 3\u20ac at the Tourist Office of Pays de Herve<\/a> or the Museum of Archaeology and History in Vis\u00e9<\/a>. There are also guided group tours, during which even more secrets are revealed… We can immerse ourselves in this shocking story thanks to fictional witnesses whose stories are based on the moving diary of Florent Vliegen. For French-speaking groups interested in more and more moving details, booking a bus tour is possible. Extending over 120km, the tour takes in Vis\u00e9, Hertsal, and the forts of Barchon and Herstal. On the way, a film is suggested to immerse oneself even more in history.<\/p>\n\n
