“Und ich war da<\/strong>” of “En ik was daar<\/strong>” is een roman van Martin Beyer, alleen verkrijgbaar in het Duits. Hoe komt het dat de \u00e9\u00e9n zich verzet en de ander een volgeling wordt? Dit is de vraag die de auteur zich in het hele boek stelt. Een vraag die niemand onverschillig kan laten.<\/p>\n\n

In de loop van zijn leven kreeg August Unterseher vele gelegenheden om zich tegen het nazi-regime te verzetten. Maar hij heeft er geen genomen. Dit is het verhaal van een man die wegzinkt in de duisternis van zijn tijd: eerst in de Hitlerjeugd, daarna als soldaat in de Wehrmacht tijdens de Russische veldtocht. Hij was er gewoon, noch voor noch tegen wat er voor zijn ogen gebeurde. Van jongs af aan opgevoed op de boerderij van zijn vader om onvermoeibaar en zonder nadenken te werken, ontwikkelde hij de trieste gewoonte om te doen wat hem werd opgedragen.<\/p>\n\n

Later, thuisgekomen als oorlogsinvalide, meldt hij zich aan als hulpje van de beul van de nazi-knechten. Sindsdien vraagt hij zich elke dag af: Hoe ben ik hier gekomen?<\/p>\n\n
