Het speelt zich af in Hasselt en draait rond de distilleerderij van de familie De Keyser (klinkt bijna als <em>Kaiser<\/em>, de Duitse keizer). De verloofde van de grootmoeder, Helena, verdween tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Zij vraagt, tientallen jaren later, aan haar kleindochter om de vreemde omstandigheden te onderzoeken waarin haar jeugdliefde verdween. In de casting vind je Matthias Schoenaerts terug (<em>De Rouille et d\u2019os<\/em>, <em>Red Sparrow<\/em>) die toen bij het draaien van de film nog vrij onbekend was bij het grote publiek, maar al heel overtuigend overkwam. <em>De Smaak van de Keizer<\/em> werd gedraaid in historisch juiste omstandigheden.
