Zijn notitieboekjes vormen een kostbare bron van informatie om meer te weten te komen over het leven van de Poilus. Maurice Genevoix heeft gevochten aan de Somme, in Verdun en aan de Cr\u00eate des Eparges. Tussen de zomer van 1914 en de lente van 1915 leidt hij het dagelijkse leven van infanterist, in de modder, het bloed, de dood terwijl het commando nog gelooft in een korte oorlog.<\/p>\n\n<p>Het werk \u201cCeux de 14\u201d is een magistraal en beslissend verhaal, aan de bron, mooi, juist, geschreven tijdens en net na de oorlog: het beeld van een gekneusd Frankrijk, uitgeroeid, gebroken maar bovenal het verhaal van een hero\u00efsch
