    Met een basis in driehoekvorm van ongeveer 300 meter en met haar ligging, vormde het fort van Loncin een strategisch platform van de versterkte ring rond Luik. Het ligt op zeven kilometer ten westen van Luik. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Dit fort was \u00e9\u00e9n van de eersten dat, door de Duitsers, massaal gebombardeerd werd in augustus 1914. Op 15 augustus van datzelfde jaar, vuurde \u201cDikke Bertha\u201d, een kanon, voor de eerste maal in de geschiedenis gebruikt, een schot af dat onmiddellijk het poedermagazijn deed ontploffen en het centrum vernietigde. Dit kostte aan 350 van de 550 aanwezige soldaten het leven, ter plaatse. Ondanks deze tragedie, is het fort van Loncin het enige in de Luikse verdediging dat zich niet overgeeft. \n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n

    Vandaag rust het merendeel van de slachtoffers van deze ontploffing nog steeds onder het puin. Er is een crypte ge\u00efnstalleerd om degenen te begraven wiens lichamen tevoorschijn kwamen na een enorme ontmijningsoperatie van het fort, waarbij 3\u00a0500 obussen ontdekt werden. Dit fort werd zo een militaire necropolis. Het kreeg van Koning Philippe, in 2014, de titel van nationale necropolis. Georges Petit heeft er een herdenkingsmonument gebeeldhouwd dat ingehuldigd werd in 1923. Het fort van Loncin wordt bewonderd om de volharding van de verdedigers en wordt bijgevolg een herdenkingsplaats waaraan je niet voorbij kan. \n<\/p>\n\n

    Het fort van Loncin blijft \u00e9\u00e9n van de belangrijkste getuigenissen van de Belgische versterking. Het is trouwens het enige waarvan de oorspronkelijke uitrusting intact is gebleven. \n<\/p>\n\n

    Om deze plaats vol geschiedenis en emoties te verkennen, organiseert het fort geleide bezoeken of rondleidingen met audiogids in vier talen. Bovendien kan je er ook een museum ontdekken waar de bezoeker de gelegenheid krijgt heel wat voorwerpen te bekijken. Zij getuigen van het leven van jonge soldaten van het fortgarnizoen. Het laat je eveneens toe de explosie van het fort te herbeleven, een zeer emotioneel moment. Indien je het wenst, kan je een bezoek aan dit fort combineren met een bezoek aan het fort van Lantin, een niet te missen aanvulling.<\/p>\n\n
