Het werd gebruikt als observatorium om het plateau van de Vaux-ravijn en de vlakte van Wo\u00ebvre te bewaken.&#13;\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aanvankelijk maakte het fort deel uit van de eerste sector van het bolwerk van Verdun. Het garnizoen bestond uit een halve compagnie infanterie, twee secties machinegeweren, 52 hulptroepen voor het bolwerk en 279 manschappen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Op 2 april 1916, namen de Duitsers controle over het dorp Vaux-devant-Damloup, maar het fort kon weerstaan. Van 2 tot 7 juni 1916, bieden Franse soldaten weerstand tegen de 50ste Duitse divisie. Maar de troepen, uitgeput, geven zich uiteindelijk over. Ondertussen faalden de Duisters in Verdun en verlieten tegen de herfst het fort. In de nacht van 2 op 3 november 2016, zonder gevecht, bevrijdden de Franse troepen het Fort.&#13;\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Een commandopost, ziekenzaal, telecommunicatiepost, duiventil, Bourgesbunker&#8230; een bezoek aan Fort Vaux laat ons beter de harde levensomstandigheden begrijpen van het soldatenleven tijdens het beleg.
