{"id":4949,"date":"2021-10-21T12:06:39","date_gmt":"2021-10-21T10:06:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.landofmemory.eu\/sites-historiques\/bajonetgeul\/"},"modified":"2022-08-02T12:08:40","modified_gmt":"2022-08-02T10:08:40","slug":"bajonetgeul","status":"publish","type":"sites-historiques","link":"https:\/\/www.landofmemory.eu\/nl\/sites-historiques\/bajonetgeul\/","title":{"rendered":"Bajonetgeul"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>De mythe van de Eerste Wereldoorlog<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Ter nagedachtenis aan de Franse soldaten die rechtopstaand slapen, het geweer in de hand, in deze geul &#8211; hun Amerikaanse broeders.&#8221; Het gaat hier over een opschrift voor het herdenkingsmonument van de Slag om Verdun, in het spookdorp Douaumont.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Het monument werd gefinancierd door een rijke Amerikaanse bankier, Georges T. Rand, die geraakt werd door de bekende legende van deze plek. Franse soldaten zijn hier gesneuveld en bedolven, rechtopstaand, met de wapens in de hand en gedood door vijandelijke granaten. De Bajonetgeul is \u00e9\u00e9n van de mythes van de eerste Wereldoorlog. Veertien konden worden ge\u00efdentificeerd en begraven op het kerkhof van Fleury. Later werden ze overgebracht naar het Ossuarium van Douaumont. De zeven andere lichamen die onbekend bleven werden opnieuw begraven in de &#8220;Bajonetgeul&#8221;.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Voor velen blijft de mythe bestaan, anderen brengen ze weer ter discussie. Meer bepaald omdat geen enkel lichaam in verticale positie zou teruggevonden zijn. Wat er ook mag van zijn, de legende van de &#8220;Bajonetgeul&#8221; laat vooral zien in hoeverre de Grote oorlog op een bijna onuitwisbare wijze de collectieve verbeelding tekende. Toen het bloedrige conflict van de Slag om Verdun ten einde liep verloren geesten zich al snel in glorieuze verhalen waarin het volk zich opoffert voor het
