Symbool van de vrijheid<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n

De ochtend van 26 september 1918 startte een offensief tegen de frontlinie van het Eerste Amerikaanse Leger. De Duitse soldaten vielen aan voor de toren van Montfaucon. Deze aanval duurde tot 11 november 1918, toen de vijand zich gewonnen gaf. Het offensief Maas-Argonne is de grootste veldslag in de Amerikaanse geschiedenis van die tijd. Op 1 200 000 aangeworven manschappen is de balans zwaar. Er waren 125 000 doden, gewonden of verdwenen soldaten. \n<\/p>\n\n

Op de muren van het monument beschrijft een kaart de uitgevoerde operaties en getuigt de geschiedenis van de Amerikaanse soldaten die zich opgeofferd hebben voor de vrijheid. Een observatieplatform laat toe het grootste deel van het territorium te bewonderen dat toen veroverd werd. \n<\/p>\n\n

Opgericht in 1937 door het American Battle Monuments Commission, wordt de Montfaucontoren, vandaag, nog steeds onderhouden door deze organisatie. Bij de inhuldiging vormde deze toren het onderwerp van een speech door de president van de Verenigde Staten, Franklin D. Roosevelt vanuit Washington.<\/p>\n\n

Nadat je het Amerikaans Gedenkteken ontdekt hebt, nodigen wij je uit rond te dwalen tussen de ru\u00efnes van de Montfauconabdij en deze van het oude dorp. \n<\/p>\n\n
