Verdun is een klein stadje met 18 000 inwoners en bekend voor zijn slagveld tijdens de eerste Wereldoorlog. Vandaag, getuigen vele musea, sites en herdenkingsmonumenten over de pijn van het verleden en de heldhaftigheid van zij die zich opgeofferd hebben voor de vrijheid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Zo ontdekken we er meer bepaald het ossuarium van Douaumont waar de resten liggen van meer dan 100 000 soldaten. In het noordwesten van de stad, brengt het Amerikaanse kerkhof van Maas-Argonne hulde aan de Amerikaanse soldaten die in grote mate bijgedragen hebben aan de overwinning van Frankrijk.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n

Op het einde van de oorlog was de stad verwoest: \u00e9\u00e9n vierde totaal vernietigd, \u00e9\u00e9n helft zwaar beschadigd en het laatste kwart werd geplunderd. Tijdens het interbellum werd de stad heropgebouwd. In 1929 krijgt de stad een tweede adem. De nieuwe straten worden verbreed, de krivierkades worden vrijgemaakt en de monumenten, zoals de kathedraal, worden gerestaureerd. Vele herdenkingsmonumenten worden er opgericht en Verdun wordt een pelgrimsoord voor de oudstrijders van de Grote oorlog en hun
