Augustus 1914 in Belgisch Luxemburg<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n

Op 4 augustus 1914 viel Duitsland Belgi\u00eb binnen. De aanval op de territoriale integriteit van ons land betekende de start van de oorlog. Engeland en Frankrijk, die garant stonden voor de neutraliteit van het land, schoten te hulp.\u00a0Het Belgische leger hield aanvankelijk stand in de 3 versterkte steden Luik, Namen en Antwerpen. Begin oktober zou het zich terugtrekken aan de IJzer waar het weerstand bleef bieden tot aan het einde van de oorlog. <\/p>\n\n

Ondertussen vochten verder naar het zuiden, in de Belgische Ardennen en Lotharingen, twee Franse legers en twee Duitse legers 10 bloedige veldslagen uit. De gevechten vonden midden in de zomer plaats, van het dorp Maissin tot Baranzy, op 22 augustus 1914. Op 24 augustus vond een laatste confrontatie plaats bij Noirefontaine. Deze bewegingsoorlog en zijn gevechten worden aangeduid als de Slag om de Grenzen.<\/p>\n\n

In de Slag bij Rossignol werd een deel van de Franse koloniale troepen uitgeschakeld. Drie regimenten werden weggevaagd. De menselijke verliezen waren immens: aan Franse zijde werden 11.900 soldaten betreurd, waarvan 2.800 gesneuveld. Aan Duitse zijde waren 3.500 soldaten buiten strijd, van wie er 1.400 het leven verloren.<\/p>\n\n

De Slag bij Rossignol was een vreselijke mislukking voor de 3e Koloniale Infanteriedivisie van het Franse leger, die onvoldoende op de hoogte was van de Duitse stellingen, ondanks de waarschuwingen van de dorpelingen over de opmars van hun tegenstanders. Op bevel van hun generale staf trokken de Franse regimenten het bos in dat hun graf zou worden.<\/p>\n\n

De strijd ging verder in het dorp tot aan het park van het kasteel van Rossignol waar het nieuwe centrum je vandaag verwelkomt. In de dagen na de slag ging het drama door, waarbij vooral burgers getroffen werden. De Duitsers terroriseerden de bevolking en staken het dorp in brand. Een honderdtal inwoners van Rossignol werd naar Aarlen gebracht waar ze werden doodgeschoten. In de periode van 21 tot 26 augustus werden in Belgisch Luxemburg meer dan 867 burgers ge\u00ebxecuteerd.<\/p>\n\n

Het nieuwe herdenkingscentrum vertelt je het volledige verhaal. Aansluitend kan je dan de vele bezienswaardigheden in de omgeving bezoeken.<\/p>\n\n
