Beiden waren afkomstig uit Bastenaken en ze hadden zich vrijwillig aangemeld bij de 10e Amerikaanse Pantserdivisie. Ze behandelden gewonden met de middelen die ze hadden en in een ge\u00efmproviseerd ziekenhuis, midden tussen de gevechten. \n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n

Ren\u00e9e Lemaire verloor samen met 30 Amerikaanse soldaten het leven in de hulppost in de Rue de Neufch\u00e2teau die op Kerstavond 1944 werd gebombardeerd door de Duitsers. Haar lichaam werd achteraf gewikkeld in de witte parachute die ze had voorbestemd om er haar trouwjurk van te maken. \n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Augusta Chiwy had meer geluk en overleefde de oorlog. Ze stierf in 2015. In 2019 werd er een memoriaal opgericht ter nagedachtenis van de beide vrouwen en alle verpleegsters die hun missie met gevaar voor eigen leven hebben voortgezet.
