Grensconflicten<\/h2>\n\n

Sankt-Vith ligt in de provincie Luik en maakt vandaag deel uit van de Duitstalige Gemeenschap in Belgi\u00eb. Tussen 1815 en 1945, echter, vormt deze stad het voorwerp van conflicten van dit grondgebied en verandert meermaals van nationaliteit.<\/p>\n\n

Na het Congres van Wenen, in 1815, wordt Sankt-Vith, dat voorheen tot Luxemburg behoorde, ge\u00efntegreerd bij de provincie Pruisen-Rijnland. De bevolking spreekt Duits en heeft een Germaanse traditie. Op het einde van de Eerste Wereldoorlog, biedt het Verdrag van Versailles dit kanton aan Belgi\u00eb aan als herstel voor de geleden schade in dit land. Vervolgens werd het weer bij nazi Duitsland ingelijfd, 10 dagen na de invasie van Belgi\u00eb in 1940. Vervolgens wordt Sankt-Vith weer Belgisch op het einde van de Tweede Wereldoorlog.<\/p>\n\n

Sankt-Vith, martelarenstad<\/h2>\n\n

Al deze wijzigingen hebben aanleiding gegeven tot tragische situaties, meer bepaald tijdens de gevechten. Inderdaad, meerdere families werden aan beide zijden van de grens gescheiden en broers of neven waren verplicht tegen elkaar te vechten. Deze conflicten van trouw waren constant aanwezig en dwongen de bevolking te kiezen tussen het land Belgi\u00eb en het vaderland Duitsland. Op 23 december 1944, na meerdere dagen van gevechten, waren de Duitsers aan de winnen de hand en trokken de Amerikanen zich terug ten westen van de rivier de Salm. De Geallieerden bombardeerden Sankt-Vith zeer hevig op 25 en 26 december 1944. Bijna 600 gebouwen werden vernield of ernstig beschadigd, dat is 95% van de stad. De verliezen aan Amerikaanse zijde zijn ook zeer zwaar: 12 500 doden, gewonden, gevangenen of vermisten.<\/p>\n\n

Sankt-Vith krijgt pas, 60 jaar na het Ardennenoffensief, in 2004, van de Belgische Staat de titel van martelarenstad.<\/p>\n\n

Het enige overblijfsel vandaag van de Middeleeuwse versterkingen in Sankt-Vith, dat niet verwoest werd, is de B\u00fcchel-toren. Het is het enige gebouw dat de bombardementen van 1944 heeft kunnen weerstaan. Daarom is dit het symbool van de weerstand van Sankt-Vith, en meer algemeen, van het Graafschap Luik.<\/p>\n\n

De historische rondleiding door Saint-Vith v\u00f3\u00f3r 1945<\/h2>\n\n
