Vreedzame relaties<\/b><\/h2>\n\n

Kort na de bekrachtiging van het Verdrag van Versailles, werd de Volkenbond opgericht in januari 1920. Zij wil een internationale organisatie zijn die in staat is vreedzame oplossingen te zoeken voor landen in conflict. Dit is mogelijk door middel van arbitrage en het uitvaardigen van sancties tegen weerspannige landen. \n<\/p>\n\n

Zoals gepromoot door de Amerikaanse president Woodrow Wilson, is de gekozen aanpak bedoeld om collectieve onderhandelingen te bevorderen in plaats van geheime diplomatie. \n<\/p>\n\n

De Volkenbond beschikte echter niet over een eigen leger en weinig dwangvermogen. Vandaar dat zij uitsluitend afhangt van de goodwill van grote machten voor de toepassing van haar resoluties. \n<\/p>\n\n

Ondanks opmerkelijke successen, was de Volkenbond niet in staat de agressies te verhinderen van de As-landen (Duitsland, Itali\u00eb en Japan) in de jaren 1930.<\/p>\n\n
