Maar op 16 december voerde Hitler een verrassingsaanval uit in de Belgische en Luxemburgse Ardennen om de geallieerde linies te doorbreken die oprukten naar Duitsland (de Amerikanen in het noorden en de Engelsen in het zuiden) en om Antwerpen te bereiken waar versterking en bevoorrading aangevoerd werden.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p>Vanaf 5 uur \u2019s morgens viel er een stortvloed aan vuur op de Amerikaanse voorposten  in de Ardennen. Op de voet gevolgd door een aanval van infanterie-eenheden en gepantserde kolommen.&#13;\n<\/p>\n\n<p>Houffalize (BE), La Roche (BE), Sankt-Vith (BE), Hosingen (LU), Wiltz (LU) en Berl\u00e9 (LU) zijn maar enkele voorbeelden van de vele dorpen die in grote mate verwoest werden. Meerdere slachtpartijen werden begaan, waaronder deze van Baugnez.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p>Op 22 december werd Bastenaken (BE) omsingeld. Maar het leger van het Reich had niet langer de middelen om haar ambities waar te maken. De 200 000 Duitse soldaten die gemobiliseerd werden  voor het offensief, gesteund  een 600-tal pantservoertuigen, zouden nooit hun doel bereiken (meer bepaald door een gebrek aan brandstof). Ze werden gestopt en teruggedreven door de geallieerden tot La Gleize (BE). Daar lieten ze al hun bewapening achter. Er bevindt zich nu een museum met haar beroemde commandotank , de Tiger 216 afgenomen van de Duitsers.<\/p>\n\n<p>De Duitse divisies en de geallieerde troepen werden met elkaar gedurende 6 weken geconfronteerd, van 16 december 1944 tot 25 januari 1945, en dit in ijskoude klimatologische omstandigheden. Dit gevecht bleek het dodelijkste te zijn dat ooit geleid werd door het Amerikaanse leger en waarbij meer dan 100 000 slachtoffers vielen, maar het laatste offensief was een mislukking voor
